A station is listed while its scheme still lists it. A station with no price is listed with none to show: New South Wales lists EV chargers at 0 c/kWh, which is not stored as a price. Times are each state’s own. Every scheme is read every hour.

How a list is worked out

Distances are straight lines, not road distances, from one point for the postcode: the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ point for its postal area or, where that point lies more than 5 km from every service station in the area, the middle of the area’s main group of stations (in a big rural postcode the ABS’s point can be far from the town: for 6725 it is 138 km from Broome). Of 2,641 postal areas, 390 use the middle of their stations.

A list can also be from a suburb or town, by the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ name for it, measured the same way from the ABS’s point for it: of 15,329 suburbs and towns, 254 use the middle of their stations. Or from your location: the page rounds it to about 100 metres, and LookFirst does not store it.

Sorted by price, then distance. Each price is the one the station last reported to its state’s fuel price scheme, as reported. In New South Wales and Tasmania a station must keep that price matching the price at its pump, so a price reported days ago is still its price. In Queensland a station must report a price change within 30 minutes of it, so a price reported days ago is still its price. In South Australia a station must report a price change within 30 minutes of it, so a price reported days ago is still its price. In the Northern Territory a station must keep its price on MyFuel NT the same as the price at the pump. MyFuel NT does not say when a price was set, so each price shows when we last checked it. In Western Australia, FuelWatch fixes each day’s prices from 6am.

The NSW and Tasmanian schemes report each station’s standard retail price, which NSW Fair Trading defines as the price available to anyone, without discounts or other special offers.

“Lowest price listed” goes on every station at a list’s lowest price, and on none when fewer than two stations are listed or all show one price. Members only: the retailer sells fuel to its members alone. Costco’s Member Privileges and Conditions say “only Costco members may purchase items”.

What this page does not do

No price is estimated, averaged or forecast, and no saving is claimed. Distances are straight lines, not road distances. No fuel retailer pays to appear on this list or for its place in it.

The map

Each list’s map shows the stations the list shows, drawn with Leaflet on OpenStreetMap’s tiles; the list works without it. What your browser sends those two services is on the privacy page.
