EV chargers: what we cover

Public EV charging sites near a postcode, suburb or town, as governments and Open Charge Map’s contributors list them. Free, no sign-up.

Each source is read once a day; times are Sydney’s. No source lists every public charger in Australia, and none says whether a bay is free.

The sites

3,133 charging sites, 263 of them listed by more than one source and shown once: New South Wales 1,979, Victoria 393, Western Australia 341, South Australia 131, Queensland 131, Tasmania 65, the ACT 48, the Northern Territory 9, and 36 whose sources give no state. A list shows 2,937 of them without asking. The other 196 are planned or for customers only, and a list shows them when asked.

How a list is worked out

Distances are straight lines, not road distances, from one point for the postcode: the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ point for its postal area or, where that point lies more than 5 km from every service station in the area, the middle of the area’s main group of stations (in a big rural postcode the ABS’s point can be far from the town: for 6725 it is 138 km from Broome).

Sorted by distance, nearest first. Not shown: whether a bay is free right now, which no source publishes; and, unless you ask, sites a source lists as planned or for customers, staff or visitors only.

One site from several sources

Two records are one site when they name the same operator and lie within 150 metres of each other (one source’s own records, within 20 metres), or when either names no operator a record can be matched on and they lie within 30 metres; never when they name different operators. A site’s plugs come from one source, Open Charge Map’s, else the Victorian Government’s, else Transport for NSW’s, so no plug is counted twice; its date is its newest record’s.

What is not kept, and what is not shown

Not kept: a site Open Charge Map lists at a private residence, or with private or restricted access, or as removed; and a record not under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. A cost is shown only in a source’s own words, with that source named, and never turned into a price; a status only when it is a warning.

What this page does not do

No availability, price or saving is estimated, and no site is ranked or labelled best. No charging network pays to appear on this list or for its place in it.

The map

Each list’s map shows the sites the list shows, drawn with Leaflet on OpenStreetMap’s tiles, each pin shaded by its fastest plug’s power; the list works without it. What your browser sends those two services is on the privacy page.
